What kind of media classrooms are available at Duquesne?
Duquesne University has 3 types of classrooms: classrooms without media, classrooms with projection systems, and Smart Sympodium classrooms. Each of Duquesne’s lecture halls (Maurice, Laura Falk, Pappert, Wolfe, College Hall 104 and 105, and 719 Fisher) contain a technology enhanced podium with connectivity to the Internet. Each podium has

Touch screen or Button Panel Control System Audio Mixer
Windows XP Computer CDRom and USB Port Access
DVD capabilities VCR player

Additionally, each lecture hall has an overhead transparency projector, and for some a wireless microphone can be reserved for use. Call the MSDC at 412-396-4614 for more information.

How do I find out what media is available in the classroom I’ll be using?
To find out what media equipment is installed in a classroom, visit our AV TRACKER website at http://ltc2.cr.duq.edu/campus_av. This web site will let you search by building and room. Once you locate the room, you can view a picture of the room’s interior and find a listing of the room’s installed AV equipment (i.e., projector, sound system, VHS/DVD players, and screens).

What is a Smart Classroom or Sympodium Classroom?
In 2003, Duquesne University began its initiative to convert all classrooms into Smart Classrooms. These classrooms are self-contained media classrooms with the following equipment: a screen, a projector, and a lecternwith a computer, DVD/CD player, VHS player, sound system, and a Sympodium touch screen flat panel with Smart Notebook software. The software enables faculty to interact with what is displayed on the computer screen and thus actively engage students in presentations. Faculty can navigate through applications by touching a sympodium pen to the monitor, write or annotate what is on the computer screen, and capture and save these annotations in PDF for uploading to their Blackboard course sites.

As of Fall 2009, the following rooms on campus will be Smart Sympodium or Smartboard (S) Classrooms:
  • Bayer 101, 102, 103, 318*
  • Des Places 111*, 309*, 321*, 323*

How can I learn more about Personal Response Systems or Clicker Keypads?
Sometimes referred to as keypads or clickers, Personal Response Systems (PRS) actually involve three components: (1) the keypads used by students, (2) the software used by faculty, and (3) the equipment installed in the classrooms.

As of Fall 2009, the Lecture Halls and rooms listed above are ready for PRS (Clickers) use.

To use Duquesne’s PRS system, faculty should contact the MSDC at 412.396.4614 to ensure the classroom is PRS ready or to borrow a Clicker Ready Classroom pack.

If you will be asking your students to purchase a new or used Clicker, please contact the Bookstore's Textbook area for information on ordering the correct University clicker.
